For the permanent railway exhibition "Railway: Revolution and Everyday Life," exhibition design agency Duncan McCauley needed three animated projections that would work seamlessly within a physical museum space — a very different challenge from a typical online video.
.challenge
Each video had its own display requirements, including one built for an unusually narrow projection format (582×1920px). The videos needed to work without sound, conveying complex historical concepts to a diverse audience purely through visuals, while meeting strict technical standards for seamless playback within the exhibition space.
.approach
Working closely with the agency and scriptwriter, I animated existing illustrations in a watercolor, frame-by-frame style, keeping visual language and pacing consistent across all three pieces — even though they'd be viewed in different rooms, at different times, by different visitors. After establishing the approach on the first video, I streamlined the process for the remaining two, reducing the coordination rounds needed.
